Many European management courses are members of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). The objective of this organisation, based in Brussels, is to encourage management development in Europe and worldwide.
Membership is granted to training institutes which can prove they actively contribute to this process. Institutions that are accredited by EQUIS must demonstrate not only high general quality in all dimensions of their activities, but also a high degree of internationalisation. The organisations’ yearbook includes an overview of the linked institutes. EQUIS has established its prestige and recognition worldwide. 110 institutions have been awarded EQUIS, with 32 countries represented among the accredited schools.
The EFMD started off in 1997 with EQUIS, the European Quality Improvement System. The aim of this project is to arrive at an accreditation and quality assessment system which makes it possible to compare management courses at an international level. It is a flexible system which considers cultural differences and differences between national education systems. Training institutes opting for the accreditation route will receive a Quality Label; others can use EQUIS as an audit instrument for assessing their performance and market position based on international standards.
