Why the Young Management Programme?
The Young Management Programme helps you as a young managers to strengthen your personal development, your knowledge of management, and your management skills.

- have a greater impact by virtue of more effective communication.
The Vlerick approach
Vlerick bridges theory and practice -- which, among other ways, is expressed in:
- the balance between scientific underpinnings and a practice-oriented approach;
- active teaching techniques -- such as case studies, simulations, questionnaires, action plans, etc. -- that promote maximum anchoring of the knowledge;
- small groups (max. 25 participants) that, through optimum interactivity, guarantee involvement and successful translation to the participants' own organisations;
- the modular and residential character that stimulates sharing of experience, networking and reflection;
- the experienced Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School professors, who conduct the entire training programme both in the selection of content as well as didactically, guided by a dedicated programme coordinator.
Target audience
- managers with 4-10 years of professional experience and a first actual management experience of 1-3 years.
- managers who want to grow
- high-potential managers who want to make a difference in their organisation.
Programme
The Young Management Programme comprises: a kick-off session, 5 modules, a self-management track (group and individual coaching) and a project carried out in small teams.
Kick-off
- Introduction to the Young Management Programme
- “Coach the coach” session for the participants and their internal coaches
Module 1: Personal management development
The participants gain insight into their own strengths and weaknesses with the aid of questionnaires (MBTI, career-anchors, psychological contract…), group discussions, interviews and role playing. This helps them grow into their role as leader and manager. Everything is underpinned by a number of frameworks around leadership.
- Day 1: Insight into one's own behaviour and choices
- Day 2: Self-management
- Day 3: Leadership skills
Module 2: Knowledge fundamentals of management - part 1
All of the basic concepts and models of the fundamental management domains. The broad functioning of an organisation is made clear, through which a more holistic perspective is created.
- Day 1: Entrepreneurship
- Day 2: Strategic Management
- Day 3: Marketing Management
Module 3: Knowledge fundamentals of management - part 2
All of the basic concepts and models of the fundamental management domains. The broad functioning of an organisation is made clear, through which a more holistic perspective is created.
- Day 1: Project Management
- Day 2: Financial Management
- Day 3: Planning and Budgeting
Module 4: Management skills
A number of crucial management skills are sharpened. Communicating efficiently and effectively with others (colleagues, departments, higher management) and good team management make the difference.
- Day 1: Team Management
- Day 2: Professional Communication
- Day 3: Negotiation/Conflict Management
Module 5: Integration
In small teams, the participants run a company in a competitive market. In this business simulation, each team arrives at an optimal result through knowledge of all of the acquired concepts, insight into one's self, and good teamwork.
- Days 1 and 2: Integrating business simulation
- Day 3: Personal feedback and project presentations
Self-Management Track
In addition to the modules, all participants go through a self-management track based on a Personal Development Plan and consisting of 3 key pillars:
* a group coaching session
* individual coaching with a Vlerick coach
* an internal coach with the organisation
Goal of the group coaching session is to make participants familiar with the coaching model in practice and to provide them with a toolkit to translate areas of improvement to smart action points.
While the Vlerick coach serves as an external sounding board, the “internal” coach makes sure that the coaching is translated into actual practice. The internal coach is invited to the beginning and the end of the programme, where he/she receives a framework for guiding the young manager optimally throughout the training.
Project conducted in teams
Small teams develop a business case - this fosters an innovative openness and anchors all aspects that have been covered during the programme. Via evening sessions in each module, the teams receive new input regarding entrepreneurship and the preparation of a business case.
