- Prepares students as leaders in their area of practice
Programme
All students undertake modules designed specifically to explore advanced nursing practice, clinical leadership, research methods, an independent learning module mapping your progression and professional development and a research dissertation module focusing on a subject which specifically interests you.
The time and day(s) of attendance depend on which modules you choose.
- Advancing Nursing Practice (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to enable students to critically examine the concept of advanced practice and to apply their skills to the advancement of practice in their own clinical practice. Nurses are central to the implementation of high quality health care and the safeguarding of standards of care internationally, nationally and locally. At advanced level nurses are crucially concerned with the continuing development of professional care in the interests of consumers and the health services. Students will be enabled to critically appraise healthcare strategies and be encouraged to develop alternative and innovative strategies which can directly improve health care experience of clients. The nature of the strategies designed to bring about improvement may be varied but could include such activities as the development of a new nursing role in response to the changing needs of society, the enrichment of clinical practice through research, contributing to health policy formation, appraisal of the continuing professional development of nurses.
- Clinical Leadership (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to prepare and develop students for a leadership role within their chosen profession. It will provide a dynamic and challenging opportunity for students to critically examine and reflect on their knowledge and assumptions that underpin their current beliefs and practice through the exploration of many leadership issues. Students will be encouraged to examine and reflect on their own capacity as leaders for both the present and future.
- Interprofessional Development and Progression (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- As health professionals, students on postgraduate programmes will have undergone previous programmes of professional education at various levels, and will have a variety of professional experience and expertise. Thus the needs of individual programme members will differ, as does the context in which they practice. Whilst there is a shared and explicit concept of the nature of a postgraduate health professional, individuals need to have their previous knowledge, skills and experience both valued and developed in order to achieve the necessary level required of a postgraduate practitioner. This module aims to empower students to control their development and progression in the field of postgraduate study and practice, and to ensure the coherence of the programme for the individual within an interprofessional context.
- Methods of Critical Enquiry in Healthcare Settings (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module is designed to provide a critical overview of the main methods and approaches used for research into topics areas related to health care, and to equip the student to apply this knowledge in the planning a research proposal. The module affords students opportunities to appraise the strengths and weaknesses of published work in their specialist area, or in health care in general. Students will learn in groups and will explore philosophical, ethical and methodological differences which underpin various approaches to knowledge generation that can inform health care work. Interprofessional workshops will allow the student to develop a research proposal, to consider its adequacy and limitations, and justify the approach taken.
- MSc Dissertation (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- To support students to undertake research, with a focus appropriate to their programme and area of practice and building upon the research proposal formulated in IPH 4012/MHR 4020. To create a peer learning community for students to critically support each other in the research process To provide guidance, additional to that provided by the students supervisors, on matters of ethical application, research methods, data collection, analysis and writing-up.
