Opleiding: MBA (Master of Business Administration)

Learning purpose

The Middlesex MBA has an emphasis on practice, and has two core themes relating to enterprise and consulting, these culminate in a final project related to a real business idea.

How is the Middlesex MBA studied?
The Full-Time MBA course starting in January or September is studied full-time over one year. The Executive MBA course starting in January or September is studied part-time over two years. You attend two evenings per week (Tuesday and Thursday).

The Executive course allows busy executives and those running their own businesses to prepare for a rapidly-changing future.

The Modular MBA course, starting in September, is studied part-time over three years. You replicate the experience of the full time MBA and join a new full time cohort for each of your three years.

Target audience

Our MBA is designed for practising managers who want to gain a generalist perspective on management. It has been developed for those wanting to develop their entrepreneurial and consultancy skills to progress in an established company or to set up an independent venture; It is an MBA for those who are serious about practice. We do not ask you to complete a dissertation instead we have a project module worth one third of the course's credits which enhances your entrepreneurship skills or your ability to act as a consultant to your own or another organisation.

Programme

Added value in course content
The course covers six major management themes human enterprise, strategy dynamics, products and processes, finance and economics, customer focus and management perspectives. Each of these themes is taught through four five-week units providing you with an intense, extensive coverage of management.

  • Two-day team building and leadership residential course within first three weeks included in the course fees A residential field trip to examine the luxury goods industry in Cape Town, South Africa (new in 2010), Milan, Italy or Paris, France included in the course fees
  • Additional sessions on career and personal development ranging from presentations and negotiations training to networking skills.
  • Business planning and strategy simulation workshops.
  • Interaction with industry The project module involves taking on a major piece of work, consulting for an organisation or developing a business plan for a new venture.
  • Corporate placement opportunities are offered to high-achieving students on a competitive basis.
  • Customer Focus (20 Credits) - Compulsory
This module takes the customer, individual household and/or business as central to four interrelated areas of study: new product development, branding and communication, customer relationship management and services management. An analytical approach is used to explore the key principles of product and service development and innovation management as well as a range of approaches in creating appropriate branding and communication strategies which emphasise the importance of developing, maintaining and managing brand equity. Continuing the customer focus, the module will critically evaluate the Relationship Revolution through an exploration of the key developments in services and interactive marketing and how effective development of these approaches can become an organisation s source of competitive advantage and future earnings.
Finance and Economics (20 Credits) - Compulsory
Financial and economic factors affect organisations in many ways. This module aims to provide knowledge, skills and a theoretical understanding in a number of strategic aspects of financial management and economics and how they affect commercial organisations. It also examines the interrelationships between key factors in the economic environment, evaluating the impact of shifts and changes in these factors on organisational decision-making and performance. The inter-connections between the economic and financial environment are also explored.
Human Enterprise (20 Credits) - Compulsory
The aim of this module is to explore and develop the personal and professional knowledge and skills so that programme members are able to manage themselves and other people effectively through dynamic change.
Management Perspectives (20 Credits) - Compulsory
One of the central features of modern management is its location in a fluctuating intellectual context, in which theories, practices, thought and values continue to evolve new understandings of the management task. This module embeds the knowledge and skills developed in other modules in this ever-changing context. It therefore contributes to fulfilment of the key aims of the programme as a whole, most notably the aim that successful participants will be equipped to operate effectively in the modern corporate environment, and to contribute to the evolution of different priorities and practices. The module deals primarily with values - of enterprise, of social responsibility, and of cultural diversity - and the manner in which professionals can help the implementation of these in organisations, whether via consultancy, entrepreneurial activity or via internal leadership. Issues such as social responsibility, managing with diversity, managing across cultures and, above all, the way in which the programme s two key themes of enterprise and consultancy are elaborated in organisations are therefore the prime areas of the module. The intention, though, is to ensure that this module retains a cutting-edge element. This therefore implies that as the corporate environment develops - and thus too the values we apply to organisations and the different ways in which these are reflected in practices will develop - so the content of this module will evolve to ensure that graduates of the programme will re-enter the marketplace fully equipped to engage with current managerial imperatives.
Products and Processes (20 Credits) - Compulsory
The aim of this module is to offer in-depth exploration of the operations function, emphasising those issues that contribute to business performance; to relate business theory and practice, including the integration of participants professional experience and to prepare participants for general management careers through role play and exercises.
    Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory
This module provides students with a means of developing further and integrating the skills and knowledge gained on the MBA by application to a substantial applied project related to consultancy or entrepreneurship. The aim is for students to develop a project in relation to a specific organizational issue or problem. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in relation to the scope of the relevant issue s identified, consider relevant literature relating to the project, collect and apply data, consider the financial implications including any cost/benefit analysis in relation to justifying specific recommendations as well as consider any other relevant implementation issues.
Strategy Dynamics (20 Credits) - Compulsory
Strategy concerns those actions that determine whether an organisation survives, prospers or dies, and our focus in this course is on understanding the strategy process to understand how firms achieve and sustain competitive advantage. Successful strategy design and implementation requires an understanding of the firm s external environment and its internal resources and capabilities. It also requires an integrated view of the firm that spans functional areas such as operations, marketing, and finance and, as such, this course will build on and integrate learning from other MBA modules. A central aim of this course is to achieve a balance between theory and practice and to use strategic tools to address the level of complexity and uncertainty facing organisations.

The course covers six important themes of management: human enterprise, strategy dynamics, products and processes, finance and economics, customer focus and management perspectives. Each of these themes is taught through four five-week units providing you with an intense, extensive coverage of management.
