Learning purpose

MA Moving Image Film, Video and Interactive arts can be described and explained in one word exploration. You are given the opportunity to explore your own creativity and the digital technologies you will use in achieving your work, producing moving image pieces that push against conventional boundaries of, for example, narrative, genre and representation. There are many masters courses available in video production work but this one is distinctive in its openness to ideas, to the exploration of the relationship of theory to practice and in locating work in the context of fast changing and fast converging interactive digital media.

Our MA Moving Image has three additional words in the title and these are important film, video, and interactivity. A foundation for creative work is the analysis and critique of others' work in the same field. You will look at films from different genres, historical periods and cultural origins in developing a keener appreciation and understanding of the potential of the medium. Digital video is the contemporary technological form you will be working in and we will consider its specific characteristics, both in theory and in practice. Interactivity is a consequence of the digital allowing creative possibilities unimaginable to film makers working as little as ten years ago. Interactivity requires that we think both about the relationship of the video work to other digital work, but also to audiences and to the environment in which the work will be experienced.

Having developed advanced production and research skills, you will move on to the Dissertation Project. This may well carry forward themes from the earlier modules but it may be the moment to step out in a new direction. By this point you may well have an eye on the next step in your career, professional or academic or both and will use the Dissertation Project as a specific means for advancing your ambitions. At the same time the Dissertation Project is the culmination of your studies, reflections and experimentation. Research Expertise The masters course is attached to the internationally important Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts, a recognised Research Centre of the university. This multidisciplinary centre has expertise in interactive media, film, video, digital arts and sonic arts. While studying with us you will work with staff of all these disciplines and will also be able to undertake projects with students on related MA courses if you wish. The range within the Centre's work is extraordinary in many ways art and science, fine art and industrial, visionary and practical, strong on ideas but grounded in real knowledge of our chosen media. Funded and personal research projects enable staff to be aware of, in fact ahead of, the latest developments. This expertise is fed directly into the teaching course. However this is not a one-way process student-led investigations have been turned into funded research projects and internationally important publications.

Programme

You develop advanced digital production skills and choose the kind of practice you wish to specialise in. There are three essential strands documentary, narrative and performance. Documentary offers the possibility of working with, for example, found material and archives, as well as more conventional documentary work. Narrative has a particular emphasis on interactivity and considers cross-over work from games design to literature. Performance explores questions about both human and machines, issues of time and duration and interactivity.

Students' knowledge and understanding is assessed by 100 per cent course work including practical projects and written work. There are no exams.

  • Creative Practice: Moving Image (60 Credits) - Compulsory
The Creative Practice module allows students to develop a significant practical project whilst also examining the processes employed in working with moving image media. The work explored and produced may be video installation, film, animation, performance based, or utilise mobile technologies, for example. Examining a range of practices will help students to explore the boundaries of what we understand as moving image. Students develop and produce their own projects combining practical activity and theoretical inquiry. The aims of this module are: - To provide a supportive environment for the student student s own work. - To investigate the possibilities and characteristics of moving image media that develops the student s existing practice/experience. - To develop research-led professional practice, analysis, realisation and presentation. - To produce quality work for a professional context and identified audience .
Dissertation Project: Moving Image (60 Credits) - Compulsory
The aims of this module are: To provide a supportive environment for the student s work. This work may be a continuation of the programme of research begun in the preceding modules. Alternatively the ongoing research may be pursued through a new project To enable the student to apply knowledge, understanding and skills gained on MDA4201 and MDA4200 and to contextualise their project or written dissertation within current moving image practice and the wider field of media arts. To use the experience of developing the project, researching and writing to enable students to: - acquire considerable insight into a specific area of moving image practice - realise and present a major project to a highly professional standard - benefit from combining practical activity and theoretical inquiry - either launch their professional practice or may provide a foundation for further academic research to MPhil/PhD
Research and Context (60 Credits) - Compulsory
The Research and Context module aims: to enable students to define their field of creative research, specifically through: - gaining an understanding of the field of practice-based research - undertaking independent academic research at postgraduate level - developing appropriate methodologies to instigate their research - developing professional and academic composition and presentation skills in planning, executing and documenting a postgraduate level research project. - developing a thorough awareness of the historical, theoretical and cultural context underpinning the student s research practice to achieve the above through close linkage with the student s creative practice in MDA4101, MDA4102 or MDA4103.
