Learning purpose

Middlesex University is the first university in the UK to offer a dedicated degree in this exciting area of marketing. The course draws on a variety of theoretical and practical backgrounds that engages the concept of value-added social marketing. The department of Marketing and Enterprise in the Business School is unique in having expertise in this area of study.

An additional strength of the course is the wide mix of students with a varied background participating in the course: many coming from a health or charity-related background and others joining from a public sector or commercial marketing background, both from the UK and overseas. This mix makes the course valuable to students, in that they can take full advantage of their prior knowledge and share their experiences, build upon them and synthesise a unique integrative approach to social marketing issues.

 

Target audience

This programme is a specialised degree for students with an interest in promoting social and health campaigns. It is primarily aimed at graduates with a background in either marketing, health, nursing, psychology or related disciplines. The programme provides a critical analysis of leading health behaviour theories and their application to a range of real world problems and social marketing interventions.

 

Programme

You'll gain a strong foundation in marketing and communications combined with an analysis of leading health behaviour theories and their application to a range of real world problems and social marketing interventions. The programme also includes the evaluation of alternative intervention strategies to successfully initiate and sustain behaviour change in a social or health marketing context.

 

You'll study three year-long integrated modules which investigate marketing strategy, consumer behaviour, market research and integrated marketing communications in addition to a one year long specialist module which focuses on social marketing, health services, and health promotion- illness prevention.

 

The first three core modules will provide necessary knowledge and skills in marketing processes, concepts and theories which are then applied to the promotion of health and social issues in the specialist module. The fifth and final component of the programme is a dissertation which is a focused and directed investigation of a specific issue within health and social marketing areas.

 

Your knowledge and understanding is assessed by a combination of individual and group coursework, presentations, examination and a dissertation.

 

Contemporary Marketing Strategy (30 Credits) - Compulsory
This module aims to provide you with a framework for analysing marketing processes from a strategic and managerial perspective in a diverse range of organisations. In particular, the module will focus on the development and implementation of marketing strategies to help organisations gain a competitive advantage in a highly volatile operating environment.

Current Issues in Integrated Marketing Communication (30 Credits) - Compulsory
The aim of this module is to develop students systematic understanding of marketing communications theory and practice, especially integrated marketing communications. In particular, the module will focus on the various marketing communication tools and enable the students to creatively apply the gained knowledge in practical situations.

Dissertation MM (60 Credits) - Compulsory
This module aims to develop your ability to produce independent research in the academic and practical discipline of marketing. By undertaking the process of researching and writing a dissertation or applied project independently you will gain practical competence in the application of research methods, while adding to your knowledge and understanding of your chosen area of marketing.

Health and Social Marketing Practice (30 Credits) - Compulsory
This module aims to develop the students ability to apply relevant marketing theory to the specific challenges of social marketing and health promotion, including health service delivery and campaigns aimed at health-related behavioural change, improving public health or reducing illness.

Research in Marketing (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to develop the students ability to evaluate and interpret market intelligence reports, prepare market research proposal, critically analyse both primary and secondary data, and prepare a market research report in order to assist decision-making and strategy development.

 

Entry Requirements

A second class Honours degree or above in a business, communication, health or social policy related field from a UK university, or an equivalent overseas or professional qualification. Applicants with a degree in a different field may be considered if they can demonstrate extensive professional experience in a related field. Those without formal qualifications can apply if they have professional experience at middle to senior management level in a related sector.

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL (paper based) 575 or TOEFL (internet based) 90 with specified minimum scores for each component.

 

 

Professional perspective and employment market

Our MA Health and Social Marketing course prepares graduates for a wide range of marketing careers or for further study at postgraduate level. A marketing degree opens up a whole range of career opportunities, usually commanding good salaries.

 

Students who graduate from this specialism move into careers in product and service organisations, in public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Our graduates pursue careers in all aspects of marketing including marketing research, product development, brand management, integrated marketing communications and retailing.
