Learning purpose

The Psychology Graduate Diploma at Middlesex in London is a conversion qualification intended for graduate students (who have previously studied a degree in another subject or have psychology as a minor) needing an accredited first degree in Psychology in order to pursue further training or study at the postgraduate level.

We offer a solid grounding in modern psychology - a body of theoretical and practical knowledge concerning human behaviour and experiences. Students with no background in psychology are required to undertake some preparatory study in psychology.

Based at our Hendon Campus you will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities psycho-physiology, social observation, virtual reality and auditory cognition laboratories plus a video editing suite.

Programme

Students will be taught alongside single and joint honours undergraduate students on existing undergraduate Programmes and will become a part of the second and final year cohort of approximately 200 students.

 

Year 1

 

Biological Cognitive Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory

Module aims: to give students an overview of the biological bases of behaviour and the cognitive approach to psychology. After initial study of the anatomy physiology of the nervous system, attention is focused on aspects of behaviour that have a clear biological component. Through a series of practical laboratory sessions students will investigate specific central and peripheral nervous system variables and their relation to behaviour. In the second half of the module, the nature of the cognitivist approach to psychology will be outlined and key theories relating to major cognitive faculties explored. Understanding of these is enhanced through a series of interactive seminars.

 

Dissertation (30 Credits) - Compulsory

Students pursue independent study with a designated supervisor on a topic not offered in-depth among the normal range of modules. The student will be expected to carry out an original investigation using a recognised psychology or cognitive science research method, and produce a dissertation based on that research. The title and methodology of this dissertation must be agreed with the supervisor in advance. Undertaking this module will enable participants to develop their methodological and statistical knowledge acquired through previous research methods training; it will develop their competence in the production of coherent written reports which are clearly presented and which have an analytic and critical orientation, and it will provide the opportunity for final year students to become competent and self-sufficient researchers.

 

Individual Differences Conceptual Issues in Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module provides a thorough overview of both conceptual historical issues and individual differences in psychology. The first half of the module covers the theory and development of individual differences in personality and emotional intelligence. Understanding of these is enhanced through workshops on psychometric testing. The second half of the module gives a broader coverage of the development of psychology through its philosophical past and the key paradigms that have emerged to understand psychology.

 

Negotiated Extended Essay in Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory

Students pursue independent study with a designated supervisor on a topic not offered in-depth among the normal range of modules. The student will be expected to investigate and write an essay based dissertation agreed with the supervisor in advance. The essay will be of an analytical and critical orientation employing coherent arguments and including all relevant research in the area.

 

Research Methods and Ethics in Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory

The module enables students to understand evaluate psychological research to understand how research design relates to research questions. It provides students with skills in a variety of statistical analyses and enables them to conduct ethical psychological research utilising quantitative and qualitative methods. It provides the foundation for interpretation critical discussion of published psychological research.

 

Social Developmental Psychology (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to develop the depth and breadth of students understanding of theory and research in social and developmental psychology. Central themes and concerns in both areas are discussed through the delivery requirements of the BPS Qualifying Syllabus.

 

 

 

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from graduates with a good honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of three years' work experience. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.

 

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL (paper based) 550 or TOEFL (internet based) 79 with specified minimum scores for each component.

 

Professional perspective and employment market

The graduate diploma is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This accreditation means that successfully completing the graduate programme with a merit (or better) confers the Graduate Basis for registration with the BPS.

 

This is a necessary first step for those wanting to pursue further training and careers in Clinical, Counselling, Educational, Forensic, Health and Occupational Psychology
