Programme
Advanced International Marketing (20 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to explore marketing and communication strategies in the context of shipping/logistics organisations. It will equip students to analyse current marketing strategies to apply appropriate techniques based on insights gained. The module also aims to develop students ability to identify actions that enhance profitability and to create a communications strategy and plan, a marketing strategy and plan, and to outline the business case for such plans.
- Business Strategy (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to: inform students of the key developments in, and thinking derived from, the study of strategy; explore models and theories of strategy and their application by practicing managers; inform students of the key developments in, and thinking derived from, the study of strategy; explore models and theories of strategy and their application by practicing managers; critically appraise where and when such models are useful; provide interesting and engaging examples and exercises that illustrate these concepts with the intent of building students capability in strategic thinking and practice.
- Business Transformation Project (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module provides students with a means of developing further the skills and knowledge gained on the MBA, by application to a specific organizational issue or problem. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in the design of a business enhancement project, application of appropriate methods of investigation, management of the change process, and maintenance of vision in the face of the vicissitudes of business realities.
- Executive Leadership (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module focuses upon people and their performance in the particular context of the maritime industry. The module aims, within the maritime context, to: - illustrate how the processes of contemporary human resource management support organisational performance; - explore the key elements of the HR cycle resourcing, managing performance, developing and rewarding ; - identify areas of overlap between management and leadership and to investigate the competences and behaviours associated with management and leadership; - develop leadership behaviours that will enable students to manage performance as well as lead change to improve organisational performance.
- Finance and Risk Management (20 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module builds and enhances the knowledge of students in the financing of ships and the management of risks in shipping. In particular the course aims to: - evaluate the various finance methods available for shipping companies; - critically assess the techniques of investment appraisal under risky and uncertain situations in the shipping industry; - explore the traditional and emerging methods of risk management and derivatives instruments in shipping.
- Optimising Business Performance (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module will focus upon the development of shipping within the logistics supply chain. The intention is to build student knowledge and skills in projects mastery, research and development R D , and innovation within the context of shipping logistics. By blending managerial concepts in innovation with the strategic need to constantly up-grade logistics performance a dynamic approach will be provided. The principles of maritime logistics will be explored. Moreover, in delivering a constantly improving supply chain, the principles and value of projects mastery, R D and innovation will be investigated. The focus will be upon the many challenges facing managers in shipping and logistics and will facilitate the development of skills and application in problem identification and its innovatory solutions. The objective is to provide awareness, knowledge, skills and insight into the organisation s need for constant attention to technical, cultural, social and environmental change in the global shipping and logistics sectors. The module will develop activities and processes which will enable students to formulate and execute skills and expertise in project management, in research and development and in innovation in the shipping and logistics field. In particular, and within the context of the global benchmark of shipping logistics, this module will: - explore the role of research and development in the advance of historic, contemporary and future operations and technologies; - define and delineate the key principles of maritime logistics; - evaluate the need for innovation in the constant management of change; - integrate and apply the principles of project mastery in attaining and sustaining operational and technical leadership in the maritime supply chain.
- Shipping Business and International Trade (20 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to develop students understanding of the context in which the maritime world operates, focusing on: - the economics of the maritime industry, the characteristics of demand and supply and their interaction in the various maritime markets; - the strategic environment of maritime policy and administration, and; - the key principles of maritime law. The oceans, seas and waterways are still the predominant conduits for international trade. Students taking this module will develop an advanced understanding of the context and complexity in which the maritime world operates.
