Opleiding: Fine Art, MA

Learning purpose

This masters programme helps artists extend and sustain a high level of Fine Art practice, preparing the student for professional involvement within contemporary art and the creative industries. The student will undertake self-initiated research into current practice and theory of Fine Art and understand where their own work is situated within the field of contemporary art practice. MA Fine Art is delivered through individual studio practice, lectures, seminars, masterclasses and one-to-one tutorials.

 

Programme

This programme takes practice as its core concern. Knowledge is developed through the processes of making art, theoretical and historical considerations. Contemporary Fine Art practice has already eroded the constraints of convention and these can be negotiated as aspects of practice, point of reference and-or return. The students may work across the material practices of digital media, installation, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and time-based media. Integral theory seminar advance an understanding of contemporary art in relation to socio-historic situations and material and aesthetic conditions. The making of work, surrounding discourses and forms of display, will be understood as aspects of the practice as a whole. A vibrant exchange of ideas takes place in the studio, through formal seminars and discussions and visits to museums and galleries. An individually negotiated programme of work extends knowledge of Fine Art through systematic research, production and criticism.

 

Full-time students attend up to five days a week;part-time students attend the 'core days' of Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

Studio modules are assessed by aviva voce. Theory and research modules are assessed by essays or presentations. The final module hasan exhibition with a viva voce examination.

 

Art and Text (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to enable a student to: 1. develop an understanding of key concepts and themes in the visual arts in the Modern and Postmodern period; 2. understand how key concepts aesthetic, cultural, psychoanalytic, historical, etc are articulated in visual arts practice; 3. develop a critical vocabulary appropriate for the analysis and interpretation of works of art; 4. develop awareness of the complexity, diversity and exhibiting contexts of contemporary visual art.

Studio Practice and Theory (60 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to enable a student: 1. To draw across from and/or build upon module FNA4030 and engage in the production of an extended body of work individually or in collaboration and begin considering the relation between studio, research essay/presentation and exhibition. 2. To instil a professional attitude toward individual practice, and where appropriate to collective projects. 3. To have defined the range of materials used within their chosen area of practice in a critical and appropriate manner, in close discussion with their tutors. 4. To work within a critical and conceptual context that is realised through analytical processes as well as technical skills. 5. To engage in research with an understanding of methods and processes for the development of work and ideas. 6. To raise questions about the institutional structures that shape debate in the contemporary art world.

Studio Practice, Research and Exhibition (60 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to enable a student: 1. To produce a significant body of work through thorough/sustained research and to work as part of a team to plan and stage an exhibition demonstrating awareness of critical and conceptual context and realised through analytical processes as well as technical skills 2. To work imaginatively with and through a range of appropriate material concerns in relation to theories and practices within contemporary Fine Art and with an understanding of national and international trends 3. To identity, develop and apply appropriate critical tools, theoretical frameworks and advanced research skills in the forming of a research topic that draws upon an awareness of current discourses relating to the field of fine art 4. To enable the student to evaluate their studio practice in the wider context of historical and contemporary art and the cultural milieu from which it emerges and which conditions it as both an aesthetic and social practice 5. To enable clarity of expression, through verbal communication, of complex ideas, concepts and theories relating to chosen area of research 6. To have a professional attitude towards their practice both individually and, where appropriate, to be collectively engaged on projects

Studio Practice (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module aims to enable a student to: 1. To establish an individual working pattern within the MA Studio and set out the beginnings of your research interests 2. To find ways of working with fellow students as a cohesive and supportive group 3. To become familiar with the technical workshop and library facilities and the wider context of the university 4. To establish a dialogue with a personal tutor in relation to personal practice 5. To imaginatively work with and through a range of appropriate material concerns in relation to theories and practices within contemporary fine art

 

Entry Requirements

We welcome applications from graduates with a good honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in an appropriate subject. We also consider candidates with other relevant qualifications and individuals with a minimum of three years' work experience. Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.

English language requirements

You must have competence in English language and we normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. The most common English Language requirements for international students are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL (paper based) 575 or TOEFL (internet based) 90 with specified minimum scores for each component.

Fine Art is a leading department in the development of practice-based doctorateswith a close relationship between MA and research students.Appropriate students are encouraged to make a research proposal, with the possibility of AHRC funding or a Middlesex bursary for further study.
