Learning purpose

The purpose of this course is to offer students two modules to both update and develop their knowledge and skills in child and adolescent mental health work (CAMH).

The course will advance knowledge and understanding of early childhood, adolescent and family emotional and mental development and of the common issues that can impact adversely upon this; the assessments and early work that might be possible to promote mental health and ameliorate later difficulty and how to refer on appropriately to others agencies.

It will enable students to explore, examine and evaluate the contemporary health and social policy initiatives which support such work and develop both the knowledge needed and capabilities required for working with children and families to confidently and safely realise that children s mental health can both be their business ("Children's mental health is everyone's business" DoH 2006 and DfES 2004) and that they feel capable to address it.

This course has grown out of an innovative module in helping child and adolescent workers work and deal with mental health issues. It draws on this rich experience using Clinically informed lecturers-practitioners in child and adolescent mental health to develop both. Knowledgeable and Capable practitioners who can engage in Inter-professional and interagency learning.

It will benefit individuals working with children, young peoples and families in London and the home counties who wish to improve and develop their knowledge, skills and capabilities in working with child, adolescent and family mental ill health and promote emotional well being and health.

Prospective students maybe working in health, mental health, local authority, educational settings and or within the voluntary and independent sector with babies, children, adolescents and families.
