Learning purpose
The Biomedical Science (Medical Microbiology) Masters at Middlesex in London is designed to provide you with advanced knowledge and skills required for a career working in a diagnostic or research laboratory.
It covers the fundamental aspects of molecular and cellular biology and modern bio-analytical techniques used for studying cells and microbes. In addition, the course includes a study of pathogenic microbes, epidemiology, infection control, laboratory investigation of infectious diseases, vaccination and immunisation.
We also cover legal and ethical issues related to biomedical research. Our specialist staff, who include microbiologists, cellular pathologists, molecular biologists and biochemists, will provide you with a sound basis in order to pursue research to PhD level.
Programme
The programme examines the principles and practice of recent advances in medical microbiology; diagnosis of infectious diseases and the efficacy of treatment; research methods; laboratory management, safety and quality control; legal and ethical issues; experimental research project; and literature analysis.
We use a range of assessment methods including written coursework, exam and the use of e-learning.
- Medical Microbiology (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- This module aims to provide students with sound knowledge of both practical and theoretical aspects of the area of medical microbiology. It intends to offer the understanding of how micro-organisms cause diseases and how this may be applied to the development of novel approaches to disease therapy and infection control. The programme is also designed to present students with advanced and comprehensive information of laboratory management and the necessary skills to undertake individual and collaborative research in the field of medical microbiology.
- Molecular and Cellular Biology (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to provide an introduction to the study of cells including the structures processes, and communication within and between cells. The module will focus on nucleic acids and protein synthesis. It also concentrates on the patterns of inheritance of disease in humans. In addition it will provide instruction, skills development and hands-on experience in the application of current molecular techniques.
- Research Methods and Ethics for Biomedical Sciences (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to provide a firm foundation in risk assessment, experimental design, analysis and analytical techniquies. It prepares students for laboratory work and research projects by covering areas of laboratory safety and common techniquies. The learning will be supported by ethical issues relating to biomedical science research by exploring the use of human tissues, manipulation of genetic material, genetic testing and cloning.
- Research Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory
