Learning purpose
On this course you will havethe opportunity to develop practical, methodological and analytical skills for biomedical research, and toexplore current international research in haematology and transfusion science. The course has a high laboratory-based practical component where students can apply theoretical knowledge to practical experimentation. You will also have the chance to be involved in internationally recognised research during your individual research projects.
This course is run in collaboration with the National Health Service Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) Service at Colindale, allowing us to offer a range of expert teaching centred on the most up-to-date practice in haematology and transfusion science, a rapidly evolving specialism of biomedical science.

- Molecular and Cellular Biology (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to provide an introduction to the study of cells including the structures processes, and communication within and between cells. The module will focus on nucleic acids and protein synthesis. It also concentrates on the patterns of inheritance of disease in humans. In addition it will provide instruction, skills development and hands-on experience in the application of current molecular techniques.
- Research Methods and Ethics for Biomedical Sciences (30 Credits) - Compulsory
- The module aims to provide a firm foundation in risk assessment, experimental design, analysis and analytical techniques. It prepares students for laboratory work and research projects by covering areas of laboratory safety and common techniques. The learning will be supported by ethical issues relating to biomedical science research by exploring the use of human tissues, manipulation of genetic material, genetic testing and cloning.
- Research Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory
- Module aims to develop student s skills in planning and execution of an analytical study and critical evaluation of real research results drawing on their acquired knowledge from other modules. in addition, the module aims to develop student s communication skills to enable them to communicate their findings in written and oral form.
