Opleiding: Master programme in Software Engineering
Learning purpose
The proliferation and growing influence of software in business and our daily lives have been phenomenal. Software engineering deals with the design and development of high-quality software systems – and hence an increasingly important area in computer science. In this programme, you will gain a basic knowledge and practical skills in software engineering.
Graduation variants
Educational tracks
A special feature of the program is its four different tracks known as industrial, research, general, and international tracks. The research track provides enhanced exposure to state-of-the-art research topics. In the international track, students have the possibility to study the second year at one of our partner universities in Europe and obtain a double degree (www.gseem.eu).
The industrial track will involve mentoring and thesis projects related to partner industries such as ABB, Ericsson, Volvo, etcetera. One of the highlights of our programme is an industry-sponsored top-talents programme intended for educating software professionals. In 2009, our programme reached new heights of excellence when four out of the ten teams that reached the finals of the software engineering project contest at the ICSE-2009. The top-most software engineering conference in the world, were from Mälardalen University, including the winners. In 2011, the competition was held in Hawaii and two teams from Mälardalen University were ranked second and third out of 96 competing teams.
Degree: Master of Science (one year or two year) in Computer Science
Programme
Education
During this programme, students will acquire profound theoretical knowledge and excellent skills in engineering software-intensive systems, which encompass the ability to cope with the complexity of understanding, designing and implementing such systems in the global work place. The students will obtain knowledge of principles for the analysis, design and implementation of large and complex software systems, with special emphasis on predictability and performance. The modern trends that will dominate future software development will be taught, including component-based software engineering, service-oriented architectures, interoperability, and global system development.
Students successfully completing the 1-year programme will be able to demonstrate understanding of the methodologies and techniques of software management and to apply them to a range of development scenarios. The students will be able to transcend global diversity and work in international teams.
Within the 2-year programme students can choose from two strategic specializations, viz., software architecting or software engineering of real-time and embedded systems. The programme provides the know-how necessary for working successfully in a global context.
Research
This master programme is hosted by the Division of Software Engineering at Mälardalen University. The division has several internationally acclaimed researchers with proven records of excellence and active involvement in world-leading conferences. The major areas of research at the division include Component-Based Software Engineering, Software Processes, Software Testing, and Dependable Software Engineering.
All research is performed in projects with specific goals with respect to publications, collaborations, and prototype tools. We transfer our research results to our education as far as possible. Most of the advanced level courses in the second year will cover state-of-the-art research in software engineering, and they will be taken jointly with the PhD students of the department.
Entry Requirements
Language requirements:
Foreign students are required to submit a TOEFL test result, minimum score 575 with a TWE score of at least 4.5 (PBT) or 90 with a TWE score of at least 20 (iBT) or an IELTS test result with an overall band score of minimum 6.5 and no band score below 5.5 or equivalent.
