Opleiding: Doctoral in Business Administration (DBA)
Learning purpose
The IE DBA is a blended part-time program that takes four years. The first stage (one and a half years) is mainly devoted to coursework, while the second stage is devoted to supervised research and the dissertation.
Throughout the program, participants have the opportunity to take “blended” sessions (a blend of face-to-face and online learning). It involves three two-week face to faces three two-week prk presential periods at the beginning of the three first semesters, and three on-line periods. A maximum of 10 students will be admitted each year. Participants attend on-line sessions using an interactive asynchronous dialog platform, open 24 hours a day and moderated by an IE professor. Participants log in at their convenience and participate in live discussions with the professor and fellow classmates.
DBA program provides students with fundamental knowledge about the science of management based on the basic disciplines, such as sociology, marketing, strategy, finance and operations. Likewise, we also aim to train them in research methods, including epistemological issues, and quantitative and qualitative methods.
This knowledge will be acquired by taking a set of core courses together with methodological courses, and by establishing a close working relationship with faculty members who will guide students' knowledge development toward the practice of management. The IE Business School DBA Program is therefore directed to managers who hold a master degree and need professional development and progression in the light of dynamic organizations through management research within current and future work settings.
The capacities and skills that students acquire during the DBA Program include:
- The vision to recognize important and unexplored business issues that are worthy of study.
- A capacity to develop research questions that can be examined empirically following the methods of social sciences.
- The ability to use a variety of research methods to collect, analyze and present data.
- The ability to select suitable methods for the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.
- The ability to able to create knowledge that is of theoretical and practical significance.
- The organization and time-management skills required to follow the entire process of research from the conceptualization of a research question to the recommendations for the development of better management practices.
- An ethical attitude when designing and conducting research.
- The networking skills required working in collaboration with the business community.
- The writing skills required presenting the new ideas and body of knowledge in a coherent way following the standards of major management journals.
The presentation skills required disseminate to their work in professional conferences at national and international levels.

The First stage is divided into three terms (first and second term for core courses, third term for elective courses). Core courses will go from October to July (first and second term), while the electives will go from next October to February (third term). Both core and elective courses are mandatory for all the students enrolled in the DBA Program. The summer (August and September) will be dedicated to Research. In other words, 2/3 of the first stage will be for core courses whilst 1/3 for electives.
The DBA Program offers a great variety of fundamental as well as methodological courses to provide you with the most complete and accurate tools to successfully develop your research in academia.
First Stage:
Coursework: This stage includes the study of fundamental disciplines from which management research draws to provide students with a variety of theoretical backgrounds and help them crystallize their research interests. During this stage students will take methodological courses to develop their quantitative and analytical skills, including a full range of methodologies: field research, case studies, simulations and experimental research.
Throughout the first year and a half (first stage) students will complete core and elective courses. These courses are designed to build the kind of research skills that are critical to the development of a high-caliber management scholar able to create solid research as the basis for excellence in teaching and the improvement of management practices. This stage is formally to work on research leading to the student´s doctoral dissertation. The program is completed after successful submission and defense of the dissertation.
Students who successfully defend their dissertation proposal are transferred to DBA Candidate status and are expected to complete their dissertation work within 18 months. Students are required to work on Supervised Research Projects with a faculty member, and to defend their dissertation proposal orally in front of a Committee.
