Learning purpose

Expert graduates who combine a strong background in business, finance and law are in high demand in the current market. The MSc programme in Finance and Law aims to attract highly qualified individuals who plan to further their careers by combining these two complementary fields and developing expertise in modern financial market techniques, accounting, corporate finance and the structuring of modern commercial transactions.

The courses are designed to provide essential tools and concepts for all students interested in the area of international investment banking and the intersection between business law and finance. Applicants are expected to hold a good degree in law, economics or business related subjects. The GMAT is required, professional experience is helpful but not essential.

Target audience

This course is a one-year full-time or two year part-time masters programme leading to an MSc in International Finance from the University of Amsterdam. The programme is aimed at both Dutch and foreign students with an excellent undergraduate degree from a good university, competent English language skills, and possibly some years of professional work experience.

The Finance and Law programme is designed for students who require a solid foundation in the principles of international business transactions, trade and investment, corporate finance, financial markets and institutions, financial instruments, company law and corporate governance, and structured finance. It is targeted at students with an academic background in business, finance, law and other disciplines as well as professionals, with an interest in combining theoretical with specialised training in economic and legal methods necessary for understanding business law and modern corporate finance.

By offering this Finance and Law programme, Duisenberg school of finance aims to attract excellent and ambitious students seeking careers in corporate and financial law within the banking sector, consultancies, public sector organisations and private companies.
The focus of the Finance and Law programme is strongly international - with an emphasis on the law and economics of the European Community and its Member States, and the United States of America. The programme is taught entirely in English. It is aimed at providing students with the methodological tools employed in modern accounting, corporate finance, and business law analysis. In particular, the students are encouraged to make active use of such tools and are guided into research and economic techniques. The Finance and Law programme is taught by leading faculty members of the University of Amsterdam, the VU University Amsterdam and the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Programme

In designing this course, Duisenberg school of finance's policy has been to create a curriculum that provides a broad coverage of the fundamental areas of accounting, investments, management, law, and finance, as well as providing a basic coverage in economics and quantitative analysis. Many interdisciplinary programmes are relatively light; however at Duisenberg of finance a rigorous academic approach will be maintained. The programmes curriculum also reflects an intense commitment to training students in the business and finance tradition and supplying them with the legal and economic tools and concepts that are used in a corporate, banking, consultancy or law firm environment.

In pursuit of this aim, the programme addresses the fundamental legal and economic questions underlying the financing of modern business corporations, and the laws regulating banking, insurance and the securities market. The programme will employ innovative teaching methods such as simulated transactions, case studies of actual deals, practical exercises, drafting and team-building exercises, and systemic research and writing in order to link coursework to the realities of legal and commercial practice. The programme will be closely integrated with other finance related masters courses.

The Finance and Law programme will offer training in financial theory and modern investment management, international contracts, corporate and structured finance, deal structuring, banking, insurance and securities regulation, accounting techniques and principles of company law. All students will be expected to become familiar with the basic concepts of valuation, and the modern financial and regulatory techniques necessary for a career in the area of finance and commercial law. The core courses of the master's programme include: Corporate Finance, Finance and Financial Markets, Quantitative Methods, Financial Accounting, Investments, Mergers and Acquisitions, Professional Skills, Corporate Law and Tax Law, International Banking, Emerging Markets, Law and Finance, and Banking and Securities Regulation. Furthermore, the programme will give students a rigorous analytical introduction to quantitative methods and mathematical skills. Our internship placements are a necessary step in the preparation of students at the forefront of the finance and legal professions.

Entry Requirements

Students are admitted to the programme on the basis of an individual assessment. Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor degree from a reputable university, preferably in economics or business with either a finance or quantitative track. Professional experience is helpful but not essential. To ensure that students are well suited to the program, we require evidence of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) and either a GMAT or GRE score. The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) or GRE (Graduate Record Evaluation) test helps us identify excellent students and is a useful independent guide for the programme when allocating scholarships.

Professional perspective and employment market

On graduating our students will have a sound understanding of the basics of academic finance and law; a sound understanding of the links between the different disciplines; an awareness of their own limitations with regards to each discipline; an ability to debate with specialists; an ability to work in teams with experience in a diverse array of exercises; an ability to deal with stress and to meet deadlines; and an ability to identify problems, gather and process information, identify feasible solutions and work towards implementing the solution.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide post-bachelors students with a curriculum, full-time or part-time, in the field of business up to the level of an advanced master’s degree. Students will be educated such that they acquire a high level of scientific knowledge of the modern business literature and the skills to apply this knowledge adequately. The programmes will have a strong international and quantitative direction, and has its emphasis on educating its students in a diverse array of skills and how they are used in the professional world, rather than focusing on specialist knowledge.

Osne Kirzner (26) is in the Finance & Law MSc programme at Duisenberg school of finance. He is also completing his Medical Degree programme at the University of Amsterdam.

“Last year I was looking for a programme on MBA level. Even though the quality of universities in The Netherlands is excellent, I found it hard to find a school that was really outstanding. Then I heard about the MSc. in Finance & Law at Duisenberg school of finance. During an information session last year I was overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of the professors. Because of the collaboration between top universities and top companies Duisenberg school of finance has become an educational institute that outshines others. This was exactly what I was looking for. I have chosen to enroll in the Finance & Law programme because it provides me with the necessary skills to build a bridge between the medical and financial world.”

“The unique thing about studying at Duisenberg school of finance is the experts. Our teachers fill occupations in the top of the academic world, but also have advisory functions in high levels of the corporate world. As students we are exposed to their knowledge and their experience.”

“Now, more than ever, there is the need of a new generation of financial talent. The existing risk models don’t apply anymore and here at Duisenberg we are learning what will have to change. We are at the core of the world of finance, which allows us to learn best about the new financial systems.”
