Action Learning Methodology

Successful managers do not rely on theoretical knowledge. Doing things, trying ideas and actually developing initiatives is what makes people competent managers (Revans 1971).

Action Learning contrasts traditional learning methods by focusing the student on solving real managerial issues. Combining theory, relative experience and knowledge gained provides a clear perspective on how to deliver a plan of action towards change. Individual issues drive the syllabus, research provides the theoretical framework and set discussions empower, inspire and create opportunities to form new perspectives, making Action Learning an attractive method of learning and development for professionals worldwide.

Facing challenges, dealing with the unknown and taking necessary risks, are key features of the Action Learning process. With our Action Learning MBAs you work on real problems within your own organisation which benefits directly from your efforts.

International Action Learning MBA

This part-time MBA is the perfect educational training tool for the busy professional, where relevance, excellence and flexibility are key criteria. Blended study methods neatly combine with international workshops; offering a true Action Learning MBA, convenient for the busy business traveller. The workshops provide endless opportunities for debate and discussion and the international character of the student body ensures that our students are exposed to a wealth of innovative solutions to organisational issues, combining to provide an intensive student experience.

Topical, relevant information is what is required in a class of busy professionals, so our faculty is equipped with the most up to date references, to ensure that students benefit from the highest-level interactions. Additional material can be sourced by way of our vast online library; students demonstrate that they have fully researched their projects, with the aid of this incredible reference tool accessible from all corners of the globe.

Typically, there are three sets starting each year, and the programme takes just 24 months to complete.

The three phases of the International MBA®:

Phase 1: lays the theoretical foundation upon which future study will be based; this creates a common conceptual

framework for the whole set throughout the International MBA®. During phase 1, each student writes an Organisational Analysis of their company, and designs a Personal Development Plan. This PDP forms the basis for continued development of leadership skills and competencies.

Phase 2: kicks off with a 9-day residential workshop at one of our international campuses in the Netherlands or South Africa. This is the perfect setting for students to inspire and be inspired, share experiences and soak in the wealth of knowledge that is available during these vital days.

There are two 9-day residential workshops during phase 2, each approximately seven months apart, and subdivide the phase into two distinct Blocks covering the following core courses: Block 1: Strategic Management (SM), Marketing Management, Operations Management (OM). Block 2: Financial Management (FM), Information Management & Internet Strategy (IMIS), and Human Resources Management (HRM).

Following each international workshop, students work on the Action Learning Projects (ALPs) that they identified in their companies. Written reports on the six ALPs serve as student assessment for phase 2.

Phase 3: rounds up the successful conclusion of the MBA by completing the Dissertation. This project differs from the previous 6 ALPs, by addressing a problem or challenge within the organisation that is considered of strategic value to the company.

The completion of the six ALPs and the Dissertation form the backbone of the programme, these projects are always intended to benefit the student’s organisation. Therefore, our students advance their career from the outset and the tangible benefits to the organisation are directly measurable.

Entry requirements

To ensure a quality Action Learning set for the International MBA, a TOEFL(79) or IELTS(6.0) English Language test is  compulsory. Exemption will be granted to those who have successfully completed their BA / First Degree level and /or have English as home language.

Our MBA students currently hold a managerial role or are management trainees. We will consider applications from those without First Degree education, where sufficient professional experience is shown. Professional management qualifications are highly regarded in the application procedure.

Because this programme is project driven, it is important that the student’s organisation offer full support to the student to execute their change projects.
