MBA at Business School Lausanne

With more than two decades of experience in providing quality business education, BSL's proven MBA program continues to prepare tomorrow's leaders for business success. By applying theory to practice, BSL ensures that MBA graduates are equipped with the skills necessary to visualize solutions to complex challenges. BSL students are immersed in a proactive, strategic, and pragmatic approach to business. They are given a grounding in functional business areas that enables them to seize and create new opportunities. BSL's overall objective is to equip students to be tomorrow's leaders, those responsible for formulating AND executing the plans. The pragmatic method works. Students leave BSL as professional executives able to make an immediate contribution to business success. BSL MBA graduates make an impact on business by excelling to top management positions and beyond, with many carrying out a vision to create their own businesses. Those finishing BSL programs confirm to find fulfillment in their professional endeavors.

Top Quality

A recent employer choice study by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd 2010) ranks BSL third in Switzerland and among the Top 200 Global business schools. BSL's unique modular MBA was designed in collaboration with leading CEOs and HR directors to offer a relevant, high quality business education as demanded by today's marketplace. Personal leadership skills are taken as seriously as subject knowledge in order to prepare effective leaders and cutting-edge problem solvers.

Pragmatic

Every aspect of BSL's approach focuses on the practicality needed to succeed in business. BSL is spearheading the education of a new generation of leaders and entrepreneurs, by putting course information to the reality test. This ensures that what is taught at BSL is immediately applicable to business operations. In being pragmatic, BSL provides the tools needed for business success; tools that can be adapted to dynamic environments, tools that will not become outdated and tools that will allow students to achieve their business visions.

Teaching

Classes at BSL focus on active learning, engaging students directly in the learning process. This means that instead of simply receiving information verbally and visually, students are required to participate and interact. BSL faculty challenges participants to move out of their “comfort zone” with an open mind and flexible attitude in order to competently solve problems and make informed and effective decisions. Only by exploring different approaches, will innovative and creative solutions be found – so necessary in today’s international business arena. Assessment based on the ability to constructively participate is part of business life, and a part of the formation for business success found at BSL.

Program Overview

BSL offers two MBA options: a highly intense one-year, full-time MBA program designed to meet the demands of today's competitive business environment or an innovative 1.5 year MBA in Sustainable Business for future leaders interested in working on sustainability issues across various sectors. The BSL MBA provides exposure to all critical business disciplines and develops the leadership skills required for success. In addition to case studies and interactive lectures, the BSL MBA program includes a practical work project - the MBA Management Report - where students apply their academic skills to a concrete business situation. The flexibility of BSL's modular MBA program allows students to join the program in a convenient manner. Under the modular structure, a part-time MBA may also be followed over 1.5 - 3 years, depending on a student's chosen study schedule.

In the BSL MBA in Sustainable Business, an integral part of this unique program is a sustainability project conducted in collaboration with companies, communities or NGOs. The sustainability focus of the BSL MBA in Sustainable Business provides a comprehensive framework to understand the role of business in resolving the challenges our planet faces in the coming decades. Participants join the first 6 months of the BSL MBA and then move into the Diploma for Sustainable Business program offered by BSL and the University of St. Gallen. Students graduate with 2 degrees: an MBA in Sustainable Business from BSL and a Diploma in Advanced Studies in Sustainable Business from BSL and the University of St. Gallen.

Faculty

BSL offers a dynamic and enthusiastic team of professors. In line with the school's pragmatic approach, they have been carefully selected based on their abilities to combine real-life experience with classroom learning. All are current and accomplished business professionals, incorporating today's issues and challenges into their lectures. Every part of their input into BSL, from course content to classroom discussion, is influenced by their professional experience. BSL's professors are excellent communicators and mentors, often working one-on-one with students. Their goal is to see students succeed and they provide a continuous assessment on a student's development. Students are trained and then judged based on their ability to be successful in today's business environment.

In all BSL classes, active student participation is demanded. This doesn’t mean just answering questions asked by the professor but also contributing to the learning process by voicing ideas and opinions.
The first step in making a contribution to a discussion is learning how to formulate ideas so that they can be easily understood. Statements will be challenged by faculty and other students. Questioning and defense of ideas are important tools for a successful career in business.

We feel strongly enough about this aspect of business learning that participation is built into our grading system. Students in every course are evaluated both on how much they have participated to the class discussion and how valuable and relevant their contribution is to the discussion.

Recognition

Adapting to the needs of a rapidly changing business environment, BSL regularly evaluates and evolves its MBA program based on its effectiveness. BSL's quality and commitment to excellence have been widely recognized. In 1996 BSL became the first business school in Europe to be accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). In 2004, the Swiss Association for Quality and Management Systems (SQS) awarded BSL with ISO 9001 certification.

In addition, BSL is the first business school in Switzerland to offer students an opportunity to attain membership to the prestigious international honor society, Delta Mu Delta. Combined, ACBSP accreditation, ISO 9001 certification and Delta Mu Delta membership add significant value to BSL degrees.

Admission Requirements

BSL selects highly motivated MBA candidates who demonstrate the desire to make a real impact on business. Candidates have the capacity for hard work, they are determined to succeed and often possess identifiable personality traits displayed through their creativity and individuality. BSL evaluates candidates based on a written motivation letter and a required interview. The interview provides a two-way exchange, allowing the school and the candidate the perspective to fully understand the commitment that both are taking.

To apply to the BSL MBA program, candidates must have a minimum of three years' professional work experience and provide two letters of recommendation.

Location

BSL is located in the Greater Lausanne area in Switzerland, a country known for its stability, cultural heritage, natural beauty, and easy accessibility. The school is located near the shores of Lake Geneva and the university community, in the heart of a vibrant study environment for local and international students alike. The country is headquarters of many international companies and the seat of several world organizations. Just 30 minutes by road or train from Geneva and its international airport, Lausanne is situated on the shores of Lake Leman, offering spectacular views of the mountains. Lausanne's historic city center is a busy pedestrian shopping zone, filled with cultural activities, art galleries, and museums. Home to the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne has extensive local sporting and recreational facilities. And, some of the best skiing in Europe is less than one hour away.
