Learning purpose
The MSc Wine business programme is designed to prepare graduates for the challenge of operating a successful wine business in today's global market. Since 1988, the Burgundy School of Business has been shaping the wine sector's business culture by preparing graduates with a specialised course in the wine and spirits sector. In response to the growth of interest and continuing development of the Specialised Master in Wine and Spirituous beverages programme, the Burgundy Business School is offering a complementary Masters programme, the MSc Wine Business. This is to answer the demanding needs of graduate students and the wine sector. For graduate students seeking to assume a managerial position within the wine sector, or those applicants with accepted equivalent qualifications, this programme offers the chance to improve future career opportunities.
The MSc Wine Business programme has been developed in response to feedback from members of the wine sector. The strength of the teaching programme is reflected in this commercial orientation, with particular emphasis on the development of marketing and financial skills, as required by entrepreneurial professionals.
Programme
The MSc Wine Business has been designed with the needs of the wine sector in mind. All course materials are structured to provide tomorrow's wine sector professional with the skills and competency to take advantage of a market recovering from the global financial crisis. Professionals will require an understanding of the impact of global economic cycles on the demand for wine, and where market demand for wine will present opportunities for the wine sector.
One of reasons for success of the New World wine sector in the 1990s has been the capacity to produce and maintain supply of a dependable and consistent product in growing markets. The wine sector's capacity to develop and exploit advances in logistics technologies has worked to favour the supermarkets in their desire to provide consumers with innumerable choices of wine for every possible taste.
Accordingly, the MSc Wine Business programme aims to cater to the training needs of the next generation of managers in all aspects of winery, distribution and retail management. Specifically these aims include, but are not limited to:
- The graduate's capacity to take control of and successfully operate a wine estate
- To manage a winery cooperative
- Work within, manage or operate a business as a
- Sales agent
- Importer, and/or
- Distributor
- Assume the role of a wine retail business
Finally, the development of this programme takes into account that the traditional wine producing countries require specific attention to the unique and troubling needs of their wine sectors. As such, graduates of this programme will be aware of specific considerations in developing and implementing a business strategy for operating effectively within those markets.

Burgundy School of Business is one of the prestigious "Grande Ecoles". The School is located in the centre of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy where some of the best wines in the world are produced. This is one of the reasons why the MSc Wine Business Programme fits perfect to the ambitions for those who want to create opportunities and are seeking managerial positions in the wine sector.
For me personally certain epiphanies related to the beauty of wine, the experience of distributing wines for student parties during my study in Holland and studying Business Administration let me to the choice to apply for this programme. For me the option to combine my commercial orientation and the attraction to wine with the goal to become a professional in the international wine industry was perfect. The attention for you as an individual student from the application process to now, was in my experience very nice.
The programme deals with many aspects of the wine industry with an academically and commercial point of view. I like the fact that it is a small class, with ambitious classmates and almost all the classes are interactive and there is room for discussion. So there is a great opportunity to discuss your own beliefs and ideas with the class. The professors are also coming from an international network. With the applied technology of organizing a web-conference, there are lectures from experts all around the world. As the entire progamme is provided in English, there is the great opportunity to follow French classes (at different levels) that help you to learn the language fast.
"Good wine needs no bush" is a famous quote from William Shakespeare, but is it? Is having a good product enough? How does the consumer makes his or her choice in buying wine? How to attract new consumers? These are some questions that are dealt with to provide insight in the market.
Above this the international atmosphere at the School is great. It is interesting to learn about new cultures and having a big variety of nationalities in your class. To be part of a new culture and learning a new language is a great experience and opportunity.
If you want to live in a beautiful city in the capital of Burgundy, want to learn about and taste wine, meet people from all around the world with different cultures and therefore creating an international network, learn or approve languages, to be educated in a very professional business school, become a professional in a fascinating industry with a master degree and to have a great educational and fun time take this great chance! I am sure that I have chosen the right direction in order to prepare myself to work within the international business environment.
